About
I’m a creative director who builds brands and leads teams across video, digital, social, print, and experiential.
My approach blends big-idea thinking with hands-on execution. I set creative direction, guide teams through the process, and provide feedback that elevates both the work and the people behind it. I’ve always stayed close to the craft—whether concepting, directing, or refining execution—because that’s ultimately where strong brands are built.
Below is a selection of clients I’ve worked on across brands and categories, followed by recommendations from collaborators and partners.

Reviews & Recos
“Hugh is the kind of creative people love working with. Not only is he a great person but a truly great partner. He listens, he absorbs and generates the kind of thinking that gets results for clients. Best of all, he can do it as part of a team but also as a one-man band. His experience and understanding of what it takes to get things done and how to communicate that vision to his partners is a huge asset for anyone working with him.”
— Scot Crooker / Chief Content Officer at Tilt Creative + Production
“I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside Hugh twice in my career, and I can say without hesitation that he is the rare kind of creative leader who not only raises the bar for the work but consistently strengthens the team around him.
I’ve relied on Hugh heavily as my day-to-day creative director. He is sharp, steady, reliable, and deeply collaborative. He approaches even the most daunting assignments with thoughtfulness and rigor, earning the trust of clients and peers alike. I was always confident knowing that his work and the work of his team had been pushed, refined, and considered from every angle.
What I appreciate most about Hugh isn’t just the caliber of his ideas, (although those are consistently strong). In the true mark of an experienced creative director, Hugh can be a disruptor, a brand steward, a coach, and a salesman all at once. He’s enthusiastically willing to work through tough challenges until there’s real clarity, whether that means improving the work itself, sharpening the strategy, or strengthening the process behind it.
What really sets Hugh apart is not just the quality of his thinking but the way he shows up. He brings a calm, positive presence to the team and approaches challenges with humility and perspective. That warmth and consistency creates momentum and makes a meaningful difference in workplace.
If you get the chance to work with Hugh, take it. You’ll be better for it.

“If you don't get along with Hugh, or you can't do great work with Hugh, or you don't have a blast working with Hugh, or you don't forget that you're working with Hugh and not hanging out with a friend...then there is something seriously wrong with you. He was my more-senior partner at Dailey for a while, and I have huge respect for this guy. Loyal, talented, nice as hell, funny, and extremely supportive and dedicated. They don't make 'em like Hugh anymore (and they probably didn't make 'em like Hugh before).”
— Mick DiMaria / VP Creative Director at Participant
“Hugh has been an incredible creative leader now and since my time partnering with him at Studio Squared. His ability to lead and solve creative challenges and work collectively with our team led to a very healthy partnership. He brings a balance of positivity and calmness even when unrealistic timelines and with an intimidating amount of project deliverables. I would highly recommend Hugh to lead a creative team, tell stories that matter and make a difference in any organization.”
— J.D. Schupp / Head of Production at Walmart Films
“The is no better person in advertising than Hugh Callahan, No one nicer. No one kinder. No one more supportive. And no one who wants to do good work more. When we worked at Dailey together, the clients were very, very, very, very difficult. Wait, throw another "very" in there. And not all of management believed in the power of creativity in advertising. Yet, Hugh worked day and night to try to make and sell good creative in these difficult circumstances. I'll never forget how supportive Hugh was of me during this time. And I will always appreciate the example he set for our creative department and agency. In fact, Hugh was such a pillar for us, we nicknamed Huge, because he was always coming bigger than big. Any agency that gets Hugh Callahan will be lucky to have him.”

“I had the pleasure of working with Hugh and can confidently say he brings both heart and craft to everything he does. With a strong foundation in art direction, he has an exceptional eye for design, particularly when it comes to video and visual storytelling. He knows how to shape ideas into compelling, beautifully executed work, and his hands-on approach reflects how deeply he cares about both the craft and the final outcome.
Beyond his creative strengths, Hugh is a thoughtful and generous teammate who genuinely cares about the people around him. Any team would be lucky to have his talent, integrity, and passion in the room.”
— Emily Hutter / Account Director at Elevation

"I worked closely with Hugh Callahan over a 12-year period, and view our partnership as one of the most productive and pleasing of my entire 25-year career. Hugh is an immensely talented, energetic and resourceful creative director (Art Director, who happens to write very well too). He collaborates beautifully with account people and has the knack for reaching workable solutions, while still retaining creative integrity. Always upbeat, positive and charming, Hugh is adored by colleagues and clients alike. His winning personality is his secret weapon in convincing clients on the appropriate direction and selling great work through. He works tirelessly, and does whatever it takes to get top-notch work out, on time, on strategy, and on budget. He’s an inspiration to all he comes in contact with, and would be a tremendous asset to any organization that values great people with talent."
— Tom Lehr / Former President at Dailey & Associates
“Hugh is one of the best creatives I have ever had the pleasure to work with. He's hard-working, dedicated and possesses a relentless drive to get the job done right. He is a tremendous leader and great with clients. One other thing that makes Hugh stand out is that he's a person of integrity. He's simply not interested in games or politics. He does what he says he'll do and he'll always give you an honest answer. I recommend him completely and without reservation.”
— Mitch Obatake / Owner/Creative Director at Obatake Media Inc.
“Hugh's wonderful attitude and sense of humor makes him an absolute joy to work with. We collaborated on a project creating very emotionally driven content for a special client and Hugh handled the creative direction with the utmost sensitivity and care. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone nicer or more jovial to work with. I really appreciate his patience and optimism throughout the creative process.”
— Brittany Lynn Justice / Designer at Tilt Creative + Production
“Hugh has been a CD/Art Director on many projects (that I have animated on) for over the past 10 years or so. He is creative and collaborative - making creative work a dream to work on. He is always engaging, positive, and constructive. And every project has been inspiring and fun from start to finish.”
— Elias Dancey / Director of Animation at Flatland Creative
“Hugh is a highly capable creative thinker that brings out the best in those around him. He possesses a unique skill in extracting the knowledge and insights in others around him and turning that into focused, inspired creative. He is hard working, high integrity and passionate about his craft. I recommend him highly.”
— Bob Shaw / President of Concentric
“Hugh has a way of making everyone in the room feel at ease. He is not only a good conceptual creative and art director, but he is great with clients. Hugh is a great creative director in that he knows how to manage the team(s) working for him, but also rolls up his sleeves and jumps in as well. Whether it be a big budget campaign or a small pick-up for another art director, Hugh gives any project his full creative attention. I'd be proud to be abel to work with him again.”
— Dennis Hodgson / Former Creative Director at Dailey & Associates
“Hugh and I have worked together for 10+ years. He's a smart and strategic problem-solver for the clients' creative needs as well as their business needs. He and I developed a strong partnership during our time at Studio Squared and Tilt while pitching new business opportunities. We were able to seamlessly go back and forth during presentations with comfort and ease. He's also a fun person to be around in office and brings a lot of energy to our teams.”
— Ellen Carlton / Director of Strategy at Tilt Creative + Production
“Is there a nicer human being on the planet? I don't think so. And it just isn't fair that he's also incredibly talented. Everything he touches looks fresh and new and modern. That's a very good thing to happen to a writer's words, let me tell you. And that's a very good thing to happen to any client's products. If you have a chance to work with Hugh and you don't take it, well he would have every right to think you're an idiot. But he wouldn't even think that. That's how nice he is!”
